Trainee Talks: First impressions of life at a law firm

Stepping into the trainee solicitor role has been an experience filled with anticipation, excitement and a fair share of nerves. As I have now been at the firm for over a month, here are my first impressions, along with some personal reflections on what this new chapter means to me.

  1. The atmosphere

From the moment I stepped through the doors I was greeted with warmth and professionalism. It is clear that the firm not only values its clients but also its employees. The open-plan layout breaks down barriers in what could be considered a very formal environment and even the most senior of colleagues have been keen to introduce themselves. This sense of camaraderie has made a daunting prospect much less intimidating.

  1. The induction

The induction week was a whirlwind of information. I was introduced to the firm’s values, policies and the various practice areas. I also received insight into the compliance procedures and had an overview from the Accounts and Marketing teams. This was a great way to meet a variety of people from across the firm and connect with people who I will be working alongside throughout my training contract.

  1. Learnings the ropes

At this stage you are not supposed to know everything - to the contrary - the point of a training contract is to absorb as much information as possible during the time that you are in that seat. Learning from experienced colleagues by asking questions and seeking feedback is the best way to ensure you get the most out of your time in that department. My first seat in Dispute Resolution means that I have had the opportunity to work with multiple solicitors who are not only knowledgeable but also very supportive. They have encouraged me to ask questions and seek feedback, which has made the whole learning process feel much less intimidating.

  1. Getting my hands dirty

Before I knew it, I was diving into real tasks – drafting documents, doing research and even attending client meetings. There is always an element of self-doubt when starting a new job role, especially a challenging one like a training contract, but getting stuck in and tackling tasks from the off means that you are pushed out of your comfort zone, in the best way possible.

  1. Team spirit

Teamwork is a vital aspect in any workplace and fosters the feeling of being a part of a community. I’ve felt connected to my team in Dispute Resolution but also to the entire firm and my fellow trainees. The support and knowledge from the current trainees has been incredibly helpful during my time at TSP.

What’s next?

As I reflect on these first few weeks, I am grateful for the positive first impressions that have shaped my experience as a trainee solicitor so far. I am excited about what’s to come and whilst I know the journey will have its ups and downs, I’m ready to soak up all the lessons along the way. Each day brings new chances to learn and grow and I can’t wait to embrace the challenges ahead.
