Why choose Family Mediation?
Many separating couples would like to come to an agreement about their finances and children but may not be able to discuss these issues constructively between themselves. Family mediation can create a safe space to help you reach an agreement with the support of our highly skilled mediator.
Mediation is less stressful, cheaper and far quicker than going to court.
What is family mediation?
Family mediation is a process in which an independent, professionally trained mediator will help you work out arrangements for children and finances following separation. This helps you all move on more quickly with the next stage in your lives.
Mediation helps you keep more control of your family’s future and put your child’s interests first. No-one will make you do anything against your wishes.
The mediator will help you find a solution which works for you both and will explain what needs to happen to make an agreement between you legally binding. The process is less stressful and significantly quicker than going to court, and can save you money.
Mediators are trained to:
- Listen and help you both to work out what has to be dealt with
- Discuss what your options might be and what might work best for the future.
- Make sure you both have chance to speak and be heard
- Provide any information needed to help your discussions
- Tell you when you might need further independent advice on matters such as pensions
- Ensure decisions are made jointly, are fair for both of you, for any children involved, and for your family circumstances
When you reach agreement, the mediator will put it in writing and make sure you’re all clear about what it means.
Mediators work with separating couples in ways that are flexible and tailor-made for your situation. You do not have to be in the same space as your ex-partner if you or the mediator decides that working with you in separate spaces would be preferable.
Family Mediation referrals
We are here to help you with the initial referral if you would like our assistance. The first step is to attend a confidential Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) to find out if the process is right for you. You will have an opportunity to explain your situation and find out more about how mediation might work for you. We will then discuss about reaching out to your former partner.
If the first meeting (MIAM) goes well and you all agree to try mediation, you will book mediation sessions. It usually takes between three and five meetings to come to agreement, depending on what you need to sort out.
The mediator will usually see you and your ex-partner together, although you will be offered the choice to see the mediator separately if you need to.
