Treatment Delay
There are a number of reasons why mental health patients may experience a delay in their treatment. This may be because of a delay in diagnosing a patient’s condition, but increasingly these days may be due to the pressure on the number of “mental health” beds available.
An investigation by Community Care (www.communitycare.co.uk) and the BBC found that there have been 7 suicides and 1 homicide linked to bed pressures since 2012. The study found that acute admission wards are over-occupied and alternatives to admission are lacking. In November 2013 the Guardian reported that one in 10 people with mental health problems were waiting for longer than a year for treatment and more than half are waiting longer that three months.
